By the time New Year’s Day came round, Jake was ready to hide in his flat until Easter. Of course, the solution didn’t work too well since he shared the small space with Kyle.

“Jake, do you have a minute?” Kyle asked, as he knocked on the bedroom door.

“Sure,” Jake called back from where he was reading the paper in bed. “I’ll be out in a minute.”

He didn’t think inviting Kyle into the bedroom would be the most appropriate thing to do, but Kyle apparently thought the location a suitable one for them to talk in. He opened the door and entered before Jake was even out of bed. Jake quickly covered his groin with the sheet, though since Kyle was undressed, it seemed a little ridiculous to be so modest when the other man didn’t think anything of nudity. He picked up his briefs and awkwardly pulled them on out of sight.

“I want to apologize,” Kyle said.

“You already did,” Jake reminded him. “Don’t worry about it. I’m a big boy and I can take rejection like a man.”

“That’s not what I meant.” Kyle sat down on the edge of the bed. “I’m sorry I screwed things up by not making my feelings for you clear.”

“I thought you made yourself perfectly clear,” Jake replied. “You got horny and I was the nearest guy willing to fuck you.”

“It wasn’t just about the need to mate.”

“Mate?” Jake interrupted. “You make it sound as though we’re some sort of animals.”

“We’re all animals,” Kyle said. “During December, I was trying so hard not to jump you because I know what I get like at that time of year. But I wanted you well before then.”

“You did?”

“Of course I did. You’re a handsome man and I like you.”

“Like?”

“More than like,” Kyle said. “I desire you as well. I want you even when I’m not so blind with lust I can’t think with anything other than my dick.”

Jake sighed with frustration. “I’m not sure that’s enough to build a relationship on.”

“It’s a start,” Kyle replied. “I’ve missed you this last week. I don’t want us to fight any more.”

“Me neither,” Jake admitted.

“Can we at least give this a try?” Kyle asked.

“What about Finn? Are you still in love with him?”

Kyle answered his question with one of his own. “Are you over Alex?” he asked.

“I think so. I’ll probably always love him, but I’m not going to spend the rest of my life pining over someone I can never be with. I have his friendship and that’s enough for me.”

“At least you have that,” Kyle said. “I love Finn, and sometimes I don’t think I’ll ever stop, but just like you, I can’t spend the rest of my life pining over someone I can’t have. Unfortunately, I don’t even have his friendship any more either.”

“What if he arrived on the doorstep tomorrow?” Jake asked. “Would you take him back?”

“He won’t come here.”

“You can’t know for sure.”

“Yes, I can.”

“Fine, then hypothetically, would you choose to be with him if he came here?”

Kyle buried his face in his hands.
